CHEYENNE, WYO. — Today, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate James Byrd called out Representative Harriet Hageman and Senator John Barrasso as the real-world consequences of their domestic policy megabill take hold across Wyoming and the nation.
A Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis of the Republican “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” revealed that the megabill costs the poorest Americans $1,200 on average while boosting income for the richest by $13,600.
As implementation continues, recent data highlights the mounting impact on working families and healthcare safety nets nationwide:
Hunger and Nutrition Support Slashed: Nationwide enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, dropped from 42.1 million in 2025 down to 36.35 million in mid-2026 as program reductions took effect.
$1 Trillion Removed from Healthcare: Over the next ten years, a total of $1 trillion will be removed from Medicaid because of the tax cuts.
17 Million Forecasted to Lose Coverage: The tax cuts and regulatory changes passed by Republicans are forecast to cause 17 million people to lose their health insurance, mostly Medicaid coverage designed to support lower-income Americans.
Immediate October Impact: KFF Health News estimates that 281,000 people will lose access to Medicaid in the month of October 2026 alone.
“When D.C. politicians vote to line the pockets of corporate boardrooms while cutting food and medical care for struggling families, they aren’t working for Wyoming,” said James Byrd. “Harriet Hageman and John Barrasso voted for a bill that places a direct burden on working people. Wyoming voters deserve a U.S. Senator who puts working families ahead of party bosses, protects our rural healthcare infrastructure, and delivers practical results instead of D.C. political games.”
“Silence isn’t leadership,” added Byrd. “I’ve agreed to debate anywhere, anytime, because Wyoming voters deserve to see their candidates defend their votes on a public stage. Hageman’s refusal to respond even canceled our televised Wyoming PBS debate, but voters deserve candidate accountability on the issues that matter.”
Byrd, a former Wyoming State Representative, has campaigned across all 23 counties to restore accountability in Washington and ensure that federal policies support working families, rural hospitals, and local communities.
