CHEYENNE, WY — James Byrd, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Wyoming, issued a sharp rebuke today following President Donald Trump’s recent campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, where the President suggested that the destruction of major American cities like Los Angeles and San Diego by Iran was an acceptable trade-off for ongoing military actions.
During the Monday rally, President Trump addressed rising gas prices and economic burdens caused by the ongoing war with Iran, stating: “They can take out a city. Let 'em take out Los Angeles, let 'em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.”
Byrd, a former Wyoming state legislator and Cheyenne resident, criticized the President’s statements as part of an escalating pattern of hostile rhetoric from the presidential pulpit that degrades public discourse and disregards the security of American citizens.
“No American city, no military base, and no American family is expendable,” said Byrd. “To suggest that our own communities or the men and women serving at strategic naval facilities like San Diego are collateral damage in a foreign war is unacceptable from the Commander-in-Chief. Wyoming families are already paying the price at the pump due to this conflict, and they deserve leadership that protects American lives and restores accountability in Washington.”
“Whether it’s dismissing the safety of entire U.S. cities or using slurs and personal attacks against candidates and vulnerable communities, this rhetoric crosses the line,” Byrd added. “When leaders normalize personal degradation, it undermines our democratic institutions. Wyoming needs a Senator who will stand up for decency, respect, and real solutions for working families.”
Byrd emphasized that foreign policy and domestic leadership must prioritize national security, economic stability, and diplomatic strength rather than divisive and dismissive rhetoric.
