CHEYENNE, Wyo. — When a single shipment of 42,000 pounds of emergency food arrives in Cheyenne and vanishes in less than a week, the system isn't just failing—it is completely broken.
Former State Representative and U.S. Senate candidate James Byrd issued an uncompromising statement following Wednesday’s delivery of 21 tons of commodities to local hunger-relief agencies.
Despite delivering 33,000 meals across Needs Inc., Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army, and St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, leaders warn the supply will be completely depleted within days as working families, seniors, and veterans flood local pantries in unprecedented numbers.
Byrd laid the blame directly at the feet of Washington’s current leadership and Wyoming’s congressional delegation, calling out the hypocrisy of pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into foreign conflicts and federal pet projects while working families back home cannot afford basic groceries.
"While Washington rubber-stamps tens of billions of our tax dollars to bankroll foreign wars and fund political pet projects, families in Laramie County are wondering how they're going to eat next week," said James Byrd. "Our own congressional delegation stands by and backs this administration’s failed priorities while Wyoming pays the price. A 21-ton food delivery used to be a massive safety net. Today, it doesn't even buy our community seven days of relief."
Byrd pointed out that rising inflation and stagnant wages are forcing hard-working, two-income households to visit food pantries for the very first time, leaving local faith-based organizations and non-profits to pick up the slack of a reckless federal budget.
"Our local charities and generous neighbors are pulling off miracles to keep their doors open, but they shouldn't have to carry the weight of Washington’s total failure," Byrd added. "Wyoming taxpayers are sick and tired of being treated like an ATM for overseas conflicts while our own people are left out in the cold. It’s time to stop the reckless spending, end the rubber-stamping, and start putting Wyoming families first."
